The MECC 2013 AFL Grand Final Day BBQ was well supported by over 70 members and guests who saw the Hawks come out victors over the Fremantle Dockers. Attendees for this event were rather keen, with arrivals starting from midday to 12.30pm.

    MECC Grand Final Crowd

Tony Ledlin put on a great BBQ spread, with snags, burgers and salads galore. All the food was appreciated by the hungry punters as the big day progressed.

There were competitions for first goal and Norm Smith medallists, with both competition winners still in attendance when the comps were drawn.

With almost 70 takers for the MECC BBQ & welcome drink package, there was even a little change for some thankyou drinks for those stayers who lasted until the final siren.

A big “thankyou” go out to Tony Ledlin for donning the apron and keep the BBQ firing and the crowd fed for the day, and to Heather and Shana for keeping the punters well watered.

In the end the Hawks outplayed Freo, however Freo was hampered early on by some very bad kicking for set shots at goal.

All in all, a very enjoyable day for those in attendance, and a good day for the MECC.

A slightly over capacity crowd (thanks to a few late starters!) thoroughly enjoyed the latest Sportsmans Luncheon at the Mt Eliza Country Club.

    Tim Lane at the MECC

MECC member John Crump secured the speaking services of his legendary sports commentating cousin, Tim Lane.

Tim regaled the packed clubhouse with tales of his background, his foray into sports commentating, current topics in sport, and a few memorable anectodes. Essendon board member Greg Brown was in attendance, so you can guess what one of those current topics was!

Patrons enjoyed a tasty two course lunch (from our caterer Bernadette Cross) of a Chicken Satay starter, followed by a Fillet Mignon main. Cheese platters to all tables concluded the food. Full bellies and empty glasses were certainly the order of the day.

After Tim’s presentation, he encouraged a question and answer session with the crowd, an offer that was taken up with great interest.

The MECC presented Tim with a gift hamper in grateful recognition of the time and effort he contributed to the club for such a successful afternoon.

All in all, a great day was had by those in attendance.

Our next social event is the AFL Supper Club “Bite Nite” on Friday 7th June. Food details will be promoted shortly.

Until then, see you at the Club!

    Anzac Day

Almost 3 dozen members and guests attended the MECC on Anzac Day to celebrate this special day in our nation’s history, and watch the traditional Essendon v Collingwood AFL match.

Members and guests arrived from the 1pm opening onwards, with the drink and lunch package proving very popular throughout the day.

BBQ detail for the afternoon was shared by committee members Ian Leslie, Shane Gillard and Matt Kirk. The good footy tucker included the old fave of snags in bread with onions & sauce, and tasty hamburgers. The mercurial meat pies made their appearance at half time and proved very popular. Shane also whipped up a ripper satay gravy sauce that was a huge and very tasty hit. Thanks gents for your contribution to the success of the day and feeding all and sundry.

All in all, those in attendance stayed for the whole game to see the Bombers kick away in the last quarter, and fly up..up! The call through the clubhouse was ESS-EN-DON!

Originally, the MECC was to be closed on Anzac Day, but member feedback was such that we did open. It was good to see the day well supported for the call by MECC members and guests. MECC member Paul Kidder even dragged a few Ranelagh members up for the day, great to see! The good news is, they’re coming back for the AFL supper club pizza night on Friday 3rd of May! ( So make a note of that date, Collingwood play St Kilda). There will be a choice of 3 tasty homemade pizzas on the night, washed down with Melbourne’s best Carlton Draught.

Until then, see you at the Club!

Almost 80 MECC members and guests enjoyed a terrific day at the Mornington Racing Club on Saturday 13th April. The room was literally “buzzing” with great atmosphere and comradery and a great day was had by all. The day was arranged by MECC committeeman Ian Leslie, who organised the use of the Mornington Racing Club Committee Room, together with the bus transfers, and Josh, our MC for the day. Ian also arranged a raffle (with help from Mary) with thanks going to all our generous MECC friends who donated the 11 raffle prizes. A big thank you to Ian Leslie for his efforts coordinating an enjoyable day for all involved.

Patrons gathered at the MECC from 11am, with the bus departing at 12.20pm. After the last race at Mornington, patrons were able to witness history, with the telecast of Black Caviar’s 25th win in succession at Randwick. Post race day celebrations then continued on back at the MECC, where race day revellers celebrated well into the night. Thanks must go to our “Table Captains” for rounding up the numbers for the day and helping with raffle ticket sales; they were Shane Gillard, Ian Leslie, Tony Ledlin, Grant Haworth, Matt Kirk, Michael Carley, Michael Edwards & Gerry Lewis. With most tables wishing to rebook for a future function, the MECC is looking at holding a similar event during the Spring.
I thank all members who supported the event with their presence & their guests. It was truly a great day.

The cooler weather of Sunday 17th March provided a comfortable backdrop for all MECC members and their guests for "Uncle Ian's" St Patricks Day Lunch.

Instigated by committee member Ian Leslie, this laid back casual lunch was received very well by all members and guests. The Irish green Carlton Draught and Guiness Stout was flowing to get everyone in the mood, to be sure, to be sure!

The flavoursome fare of tasty chicken and vegetable soup, followed by succulent roast lamb, gravy and vegetables was enjoyed by all on the cool Sunday afternoon. It was cold enough that we had the first fire of the year in the back bar.

Easy going background music was upgraded to motorsport later in the day as many patrons decided to stay and enjoy the spectacle of the Australian Grand Prix on the TV and enjoy after lunch drinks by the cosy fireside.

    MECC Open Fire

Thanks go to Ian Leslie for the concept and arranging the catering. Thanks to Mary Leslie for the table bouquets; and to Ian Leslie, Shane & Julie Gillard, Matt Kirk and Dennis Harvey for assistance in setting up and packing up on the day. All in all, a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon for all involved.

Our next social event is our Mornington Race Day on Saturday 13th of April. Places are filling fast, so register on line or at the club so you don't miss out on this very popular MECC event.

Until then, see you at the Club!
