It was great to see bookings for 4 good tableloads of participants for the annual Mt Eliza Country Club Gentleman's Christmas Luncheon.

This event was actually cancelled in the past due to lack of interest, so it was great to see this event back on the MECC social calendar, where it rightfully belongs.

Through committeeman Ian Leslie, caterer Bernadette Cross presented diners a tasty prawn starter, with a substantial main course of ham, roast turkey and turkey pork and five vegetables (phew!). Dessert was tasty pudding with custard and cream. There wasn't a hint of stomach space left in the clubhouse! It was thumbs up all around for the quality and quantity of food.

The vibe of the day was sensational. Background music transitioned to the Perth Test during the course of the afternoon to the enjoyment of all.

The Whisky and Wine Raffle was popular, with the winners being:

1st Prize - Johnnie Walker Black Label Whisky & tumbler set: Graeme Hosking

2nd Prize - Johnnie Walker Red Label: Geoff Taylor

3rd Prize - Penfolds Bin 28: Derek Nicolson

4th Prize - D'Arenberg High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon: Darren Nelson

5th Prize - Red Hill Chardonnay: Peter Ongarello

This event has well and truly re-established itself on the club's social calendar and is sure to be even better supported next year.

Thanks go to Ian Leslie, John Carroll, Shane Gillard and Tony Lledlin for setting up for the function, with assistance from Dennis Harvey.

The magnificent Long Island Country Club was once again the location of the Mt Eliza Country Club’s Annual Golf Day. We had a good turnout of 56 players, playing in 14 fours. Clearing skies and mild weather made for a great golfing experience for all participants.

Players were cooked a hearty BBQ breakfast by Matt Kirk and Shane Gillard. Shane also helped “on the bag” with the betting hole. The popular drinks cart did the rounds, together with some tasty ribbon sandwiches for those who needed more sustenance.

The Grand Prize of $50,000 for a hole in one was only narrowly missed, with one player lipping the cup on the feature par 3, rolling only 44cm past!

Function convenor Warren Walsh, together with Craig Wells and Chris Bussau formed the subcommittee who ran the day, thank you gents.  Players received carry bags with drinks, plus a huge array of prizes for the winners and runners up.

Following the wide and varied quality of golfing rounds, players made their way back to the MECC for a 2 course luncheon and a surprise free keg of beer from our supplier CUB, courtesy of Tony Ledlin. All in all, a great day was had by all.

    Congratulations must go to:-

    Dermott Brereton
Above: Dermott Brereton addresses Members & Guests at the Mount Eliza Country Club

A packed Mount Eliza Club greeted our latest guest speaker, Dermott Brereton, for the recent Sportsmans Luncheon.

A previous visitor to the MECC, Dermott kindly donated his time and effort to help raise vital funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the clubrooms and its surrounds.

Originally allowing us half an hour of speaking and question time, this generously ran out to over 75 minutes. There were mixed stories of his local junior football, his recruitment and career with Hawthorn, together with his rating and comment of past and current players and characters. His insight into the game was analytical and clinical, demonstrating his vast football experience. All tales were told with good humour, whether at his expense, or that of others!

The auction of a Hawthorn 23 signed guernsey and Hawthorn Football club football were supported well by Steve and James Batty respectively. Thankyou both for the support you showed the MECC on the day by your attendance and support of the auctions.

All in all the feedback for the day, meal and guest speaker has been excellent. I thank all MECC members who attended, especially the efforts made in bringing guests to make the day a great success for your club.

    Brereton Lunch
Above: Members and Guests listen intently to Dermott Brereton

We are striving to source quality speakers for our Sportsman and Business themed luncheons. The MECC is actively negotiating with an acclaimed sporting commentator for a future MECC sportsmans Lunch. We hope to secure his services prior to Christmas and will advise accordingly.

Once again, a huge thank you to all MECC members and guests who supported this function. The support is much appreciated and vital to the ongoing rejuvenation of the Mt Eliza Country Club.

    Regards,

    MECC Gardening Working Bee

A small gardening working bee was held at the club on Saturday 28th July. As a result of some older trees dying off and being removed from the Old Mornington Rd boundary, Ian Leslie and I sourced some mature plants to provide privacy coverage for the Club, as well as protection from the late afternoon summer sun in years to come. We also sourced some grevilleas for coverage to the front entrance area.

Thanks go to John Carroll, Ian Leslie, Matt Kirk and Chris Chapman for getting on the shovels and getting these new plants in the ground to keep the club surrounds in great condition. Thanks also to Shane Gillard for opening the club due to a staff roster shortfall, and most importantly, for "watering" us when the job was done. Thanks Shane.

    Regards,
    Paul Abel

The recently washed-out golf day between the Sandringham Club and the Mount Eliza Club, was finally played at the Victoria Golf Club last Friday.
Friday the 13th it turned out to be, for the MECC team -  as far as the result went anyway!!
Eleven golfers from our club, faced eighteen players from the Sandringham club
This meant that only one score didn’t count for us, while Sandy could drop off their eight worst scores
It proved to be the difference...
The MECC team had the best 3 scores of the day, but were beaten by 11 stableford points - after adding the best 10 scores from each side

Congratulations to our best three players on the day, namely:
    Brett McEwing..............................36pts
    Bernard Montgomery...................34pts, and
    Craig Wells....................................33pts

Craig also took out the Longest Drive prize, with a “monster” up the middle!!
Alex (shin-boner) Wright won the NAGA award (in the absence of Geoff Taylor!) with a score of 18pts
We blame Michael Carley for the loss – he had 23pts on the front nine, and 5pts on the back nine
(the choking-noise was audible across the entire course!! – only joking Michael))
Despite the loss, we ALL had a great day – congrats to Sandy – the 3 events so far have all been won by the home team, we intend to continue that trend, when the Sandringham Club comes down to the Peninsula next year

Thanks go to ALL our players...
....especially for putting up their hands to represent the Mount Eliza Country Club
They had a go....and more importantly, had a great day, which finished up back at our club
The MECC full set of scores, are as follows:

     Brett McEwing 36 20
     Bernard Montgomery 34 17
     Craig Wells 33 7
     Michael Edwards 29 27
     Michael Carley 28 22
     Chris Bussau 25 15
     Matthew Troy 23 9
     Ron Turner 21 12
     Lindsay Watts 21 20
     Geoff Davis 20 17
     Alex Wright 18 34

    Well done gentlemen!!
It’s not whether you win or lose...
...it’s HOW you play the game!!!

Last Friday night 22nd June, approximately 40 members and guests enjoyed sumptuous Scandinavian fare at the latest MECC Supper Club evening.

    Scandinavia Bite Night 2

With the added bonus of both beautiful Samantha & Emma Melas (daughters of Andrew & Tina, pictured above with Paul Abel and Matt Kirk) helping to serve the tasty fare;  the smoked & cured  salmon, succulent roast beef and delicious danish dogs were handed out to an appreciative and hungry crowd.

Above: Members & Guests enjoy a taste of Scandinavia

The Scandinavian theme was included along the beverage line with a Carlsberg beer special,  Schnapps and Akvavit being sampled and enjoyed by many.

Athough numbers were down a little on the previous Supper club events, the night was still a success for the MECC.

Thanks go to all those who helped prepare and give their time to the MECC so those attending could enjoy themselves. Helpers include Chris Chapman & Hege Olsen, Andrew & Tina Melas, Samantha & Emma Melas, Matt & Kym Kirk and Terri-Ann Moore.

SNOOKER - MT ELIZA CLUB VS SANDRINGHAM

    Sandringham Snooker

It felt right ( sorry about the pun ) but the winter of our discontent continues as our team loses to Sandringham 4 games – 2 at Sandringham Club on Friday 15th June.
Take note Geoff and Ruby - Chris Bussau will be applying to work as a limousine driver soon as his exemplary driving skills of the team bus and dropping people to their front doors at the end of the night was outstanding.

The newest recruit to the team Matthew Troy has moved up the ranking from 65th drop to number two following in the footsteps of Matthew Kirk. The pair put on a masterly display of power snooker and we are absolutely certain that if it had of been on a smaller table the opposition would not only of lost the match but would not have had a shot.

Warren Walsh also filled in as a replacement and combined with Dennis Harvey to beat Sandringham in a strategic game that took nearly an hour and half. The boys played a completely measured game where they wore down the opposition and ended up beating them by one point. The only sour note to the win was the bragging rights that the pair continued with well into the night about how they won. Intriguing game to watch and well done to the pair of them.

IN the singles Alex Wright was steaming ahead of the opposition and made the biggest break of the night from either team with 25 at the start of the match. Finding himself well in front Alex took his foot off the accelerator and was pipped just at the end of the game by Sandringham’s club singles champion. We will be chipping in and collectively buying Alex a dvd on Hamilton’s formula 1 career to see if we can keep that foot to the floor. Good game though Alex.

Chris Bussau found himself in a similar position when he too lost his match on the black ball and it is still a point of contention whether it was a determined shot from Bob of Sandy or it just bounced into the hole. Again another close match that could have gone either way! Its amazing how someone can swear so well under their breath!

Mike Edwards’ singles match was a right off from the start where the opponent sunk two reds off his first shot followed by a black and continued doing that until the match was conceded with a forty point deficit. Not much to say here except that the captaincy is certainly up for grabs.
Nigel Lowe returned the favour however, by doing the same to their player and completely sweeping the opposition away. And he was magnanimous about his win, which is really unusual for a Pommie. That being said it was a great display of snooker skills.

Sandringham as is usual provided a superb meal, fine wines and good company for the evening. Although the Shakespearian theme of discontent was mentioned the tragedy for the Sandy boys was that we completely cleaned them out of their hard earned in the two up at the end of the night. Ted, Alan and Doc from Sandy - we salute you!

Thanks to all who made it, commiserations to those who couldn’t.  The 2007 singles club challenge is open for registration now to those who were members in 2007. Even if we have only two register for the comp the naming rights on the board will be completed, so if you think you have a chance, go for it.

Scribed by our Snooker Captain, Mr Michael Edwards.
